OKL Challenge - Day 30! Holiday Guest Rooms Inspired by Favorite Brands

Believe it or not, it's Day 30 of my One Kings Lane 30-Day Challenge and the holiday season is officially upon us. And while holidays are ostensibly about family, togetherness, giving, and rejoicing in the goodness of humankind, yada, yada, yada...to lots of us holidays mean two things: house guests and retail. So in homage to these time-honored midwinter traditions, for my final installment of a One Kings Lane mood board...drum roll, please...I bring you six guest rooms inspired by a few of my favorite retailers. Each with a subtle nod to the holiday season.

Excluding the Ikea Sveio nightstand that plays a starring role in each board, all items are sourced from today's sales on One Kings Lane. As such, these boards don't actually contain items by the retailer that inspired them. What?! I know! SO confusing. But "inspired" is a beautiful word that's applied pretty loosely these days. I chose to channel the spirit (or aura, if you believe in that sort of thing) of the retailers I deeply esteem and admire. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

A few notes on guest room essentials for those prepping for guests. As a demanding guest, I like to see a couple items on or around the nightstand of my temporary living quarters:

1. A water glass.And perhaps a carafe if you're feeling generous and/or your bathroom sinks do not dispense potable water. (FYI, anything outside of NYC is borderline.)
2. A small dish or shallow bowl for a guest to stash ear plugs, earrings, hair elastics, watch, etc.
3. A reading light
4. A soft surface on the floor beside bed (acceptable forms include: area rugs, runners, bath mats or animal skin.)
5. Tissues

An alarm clock used to be recommended, but I think most people use their cell phones these days. A charger would be a nice thing to include, but really, your guests should have their act together enough to remember to bring their own charger (Not that I do remember to bring my own charger when I travel, just saying I should.)

I love the idea of adding a little holiday flavor by pinning ornaments up on the wall over the nightstand. It would be a cute and subtle way to recognize that indeed it is December and that is something we celebrate. I've also included candlestick holders because a) there were a multitide of cool candlestick holders on sale today and b) there are some bedroom activities that are best conducted by the low, flattering light of a candle. Like telling ghost stories or reading Dickens. (Really. This is a family blog. Mind out of the gutter.)

Inspired by: Jonathan Adler

These mid-century modern lines, funky ceramics, bold pops of color and graphic patterns scream Jonathan Adler to me. Granted, it's more of a "Jonathan Adler Goes to Morocco" kind of thing, but I bet Morocco's nice this time of year and I'm sure he wouldn't mind a quick jaunt.

Inspired by: Calypso St. Barth

Calypso St. Barth is one of my go-to retailers (my mom's too!) for clothes and home alike. They have a great interplay between sophisticated neutrals and pastels with a hint of beachy glamour. This shimmering, ethereal nightstand set-up really reminds me of their vibe. Especially that stalactite candleholder-- doesn't it look kinda like the drip castles kids make on the beach?

Inspired by: Kate Spade

Kate Spade is the queen of polka dots and playful, preppy style. The illustrated rope and quirky ampersand cushions instantly reminded me of her. I especially love Kate Spade because as fun and flirty as her designs are, she never lets it veer too far into girlie girl territory. I tried to apply that same philosophy here by using gender-neutral colors for the more feminine patterns and tempering the super-bling ornaments with a black & white boxing photo (how cool is that shot?) and masculine wood & iron candlestick holders.

Inspired by: Anthropologie

For my Anthropologie-inspired nighstand, I went for a more bohemian and vintage look. Anthropologie does a great job of incorporating a lot of natural elements, so threw in the raw teak bowl, bird statue, vintage oil paintings of vegetables and those cool wood curl ornaments as nods to mother nature. (Linz, with its yellow and purple color scheme, this one's for you.)

It's hard to pin down West Elm's style these days, because they've really diversified their audience with their global collections. But in spite of that, I think they've done a great job of staying true to their classic style. To me, West Elm is fresh, clean, down-to-earth and immensely liveable.

Restoration Hardware usually goes in pretty hard for the whole holiday thing. Holiday-themed catalog, special gift items and what not. So this is the most heavy handedly holiday-themed of the boards. But in  ephemeral Restoration Hardware style, it's mixes modern with industrial accents and includes sepia-toned artwork and a wee bit of french country (witness grain sack pillow).

OKL 30-Day Challenge - Day 29: Nursery Style

Don't get all excited now, people. This post is in no way an indication that I intend to have a tiny person in my life anytime soon. Hektor keeps our hands full as it is. But all the cool kids seem to be decorating nurseries these days (Exhibit A and Exhibit B) and god forbid I miss the boat on what the cool kids are doing.

95% of the items in the mood boards are available via today's One Kings Lane sales. But a few non-One Kings Lane items snuck in. Obviously, the crib-- which I hear is a key component to the nursery. Since I don't know anything about babies, least of all where one buys baby stuff, I stuck in a white and walnut crib by Oeuf Baby. It's neat looking. If they made a bigger, I might just sleep in it. Board #1 includes a rocker/glider, which I understand to be highly recommended these days. Something to do with rocking your baby to sleep? Boards #2 and 3 do not include rockers or gliders, because I intend to hypnotize my baby to fall into a deep and peaceful sleep upon hearing the trigger word, "carrot." But just in case that strategy fails (which it won't) I did include a comfy chair and ottoman in each room.

How come nurseries are always so colorful and pastel-y? Is that a social convention or an actual developmental issue? If the latter, then imagine that board #2 is for a baby with two very spirited older siblings and the parents are really hoping this one turns out to be more of a chill, bump-on-a-log kind of baby.

It was a big day on One Kings Lane-- Ralph Lauren, David Hicks and emerging artists limited edition prints. Lucky little babies.

OKL Challenge - Day 21: Feeling Moody

Day 21 of my One Kings Lane 30-Day Challenge. I've had a headache on-and-off for the past 48 hours that's left me pretty moody. One minute I'm a ball of enthusiasm and productivity. The next, I just want to crawl under my desk and go to sleep. My poor coworkers.

Rather than fight it, I thought I'd use it as inspiration and throw together a few of the moodiest pieces on sale at One Kings Lane-- plus an image of ABC Home's Poolside Strata Wallpaper that perfectly captures how I'm feeling today. And what's moodier than a Magic 8 Ball?

PS I know Rachel Zoe's exclusive wrapping paper collection for One Kings Lane (the website's first exclusive line of products) is supposed to be the headliner today, but I'm more excited about the Saatchi sale. Saatchi is one of my favorite websites for affordable art. The social media component makes it awesome way to discover up-and-coming artists who share your aesthetic. OKL Challenge - Day 18: Neighborhood Love

I love my neighborhood like Liz Lemon loves Sandwich Day. On a sunny afternoon like yesterday, I walk around with a goofy smile on my face drinking in how splendidly awesome it is to live in the Cobble Hill-Boerum Hill-Carroll Gardens bubble. (I will not call it BoCoCa.) I moved to Cobble Hill about 1 1/2 years ago-- and when I quickly discovered it was harder to find dried pasta than fresh within a 6 block radius of my apartment, I knew I'd found my place in the world.

So naturally this Brooklyn Pillow caught my attention on One Kings Lane today-- Day 18 of my 30-Day Challenge, if you're counting.  Here's the pillow styled with a few of my other favorites items, selected from today's sales. See my Pinterest board for more favorites.

OKL Challenge - Day 15: Ikea's Lack Shelf

I recently installed Ikea's Lack Shelf in matte red in my bedroom in Brooklyn. At $14.99, it's one of their best value products. It definitely looks more expensive than it is. (Note: The super cool high-gloss finish, available in gray and red, is $16.99) I am also pleased to report that the floating bracket was surprisingly easy to install.

Now that it's up, it's looking a little bare. In part because I'm nervous about the weight load. Ikea claims it has a max weight load of between 11 to 33 lbs, depending on what kind of wall fasteners you use-- a pretty wide range! Because I have drywall, I did use anchors. But since my studs didn't line up with where I wanted the shelf, I've tried to stick to the 11 lb end of the spectrum.

OKL Challenge - Day 14: Election Day

I took advantage of the provision ballot option for New Yorkers and voted near my office, instead of my registered polling station near my parents' apartment in upper Manhattan. (I was planning to trekk up there after work, but heard that there are lines over an hour at the polling station and the east side subway is still experiencing massive delays and overcrowding.) Here in the financial district, I was in and out of the polling station in 10 minutes!

OKL Challenge - Day Eight: Channeling The Brick House

Day Eight of my 30-day One Kings Lane Challenge is a dark and stormy one. We're hunkered down in Brooklyn with a week's worth of canned tuna and a bathtub full of back-up water, waiting out Hurricane Sandy. Mentally, however, I'm in California. In fact, I spent all day scouring the flea markets in the environs of Hemet with one of my favorite bloggers, Morgan Satterfield. Just a balmy day of happy thrifting with a seasoned adviser. Not a 60 mph wind gust or storm surge warning in sight.

Morgan's blog The Brick House, has a became a real fan favorite for Morgan's witty prose and unique home-- a combo of 70s era thrift store finds, quirky flea market art, well-documented DIYs and iconic mid-century modern originals (even a few replicas, as she's not afraid to admit). Lately, she's been nursing a real affection for fiber wall art, creepy cool portraits and West German pottery. But above all, her trademark is her color scheme-- "brown town," as she affectionally dubs it. Here are a recent few shots of her constantly evolving brown town digs:

In more hurricane news, Day Nine might not happen if we lose power. We're ready for whatever happens, but Hektor's in for a rough couple days. He's a brave pup-- he fears no dog or man. But strong sudden gusts of wind are most definitely not his jam. Hektor's spent most of the day hiding from the storm, curled up under the comforter with his favorite chew toy, a (naturally-shed) deer antler:

OKL Challenge - Day Seven: Channeling Emily Henderson (Channeling Ian Brennan)

Oh, Emily Henderson-- how do I love thee? Let me count the ways. This lady just gets it. She understands people and real stuff like budgets. Most importantly-- with her possibly patented style diagnosis test, she understands that people are like onions (or parfaits, if you prefer). We have layers. And sometimes we have stuff that's not perfect, but we're not willing to toss it just yet. In my humble opinion (but also her own!), no episode of Secrets from a Stylist showcases her magic touch quite like the pilot episode.

I think it's the chemistry between Emily and long-time friend-- and as she'll endearingly never miss an opportunity to tell you-- co-creater of Glee, Ian Brennan. You can just see that they have the sweetest friendship. You know that kind of friendship where you go to someone's house for a party and go around removing throw pillows from the sofa because there are too many? Yup, that is true friendship people. The kind of friend who won't hate you for micromanaging their couch.

While I may have absent-mindedly adjusted or smoothed on occasion, I've never actually removed anything from a friend's sofa. But I every time I go over to my friend Margot's house, I have this weird tick of going through every room examining everything like I'm the fricking landlord or a city health inspector. I bet it seems super bizarre to the other party guests, but really it's just because she's always coming up with cool, clever ways of re-arranging her stuff. Or making vignettes out of tiny figurines. (Oh god, I hope she's making the vignettes. I always sort of assumed they weren't moving themselves, but just maybe...) And sometimes when someone's such a close friend that they're more like family, you sorta forget it's not your house? Guilty.

Enough about me. Let's get back to Emily Henderson. Another cool thing about her? She's not afraid to mix silver and brass. And that takes cojones, let me tell you. I think my dream job might be Emily's assistant. Is it strange that my dream job is to be someone else's (almost definitely) unpaid intern? Yeah, maybe. And you bet my dad and/or therapist would have a few things to say about it. But, people, she's just THAT cool. And her self-proclaimed best work is when she channels Ian Brennan's style in his L.A. home.

So for Day Seven of my 30-day One Kings Lane Challenge, I'm going to channel Emily Henderson channeling Ian Brennan. She diagnoses his layers as FDR Chic + 60s British Mod + Global Backpacker. Second-degree channeling, folks. Buckle your seat belts-- it's going to be a wild ride.

OKL Challenge - Day Six: One Kings Lane + Blu Dot

Day Six! And man, was it a killer day on One Kings Lane. Apparently, I was not alone in noticing the abundance of awesomeness emanating from my computer screen. By the time I got to check out today's sales (around 11:30), about half my favorite items were sold out or in another member's cart. This faux antler wall mount for $69! I wanted so badly to buy it and slap it up on Ryan's bookshelf. My plan was to copy the fabulous Emily Henderson and hang a vintage frame around it, like this:

To ensure I never again miss out on a rocking set of faux antlers, I have issued an A.P.B. to my colleagues that I will henceforth be unavailable for 11 a.m. meetings due to a standing conflict.

I know we can all hear the tiniest violin in the world playing for me, but let's back to business. I'm going to try something a little different today with my mood boards. I like the challenge of digging through OKL sales for vintage or globally-sourced pieces that would work well in a modern home. That's what inspired me to commit to this 30-day challenge in the first place! But unless there's a sale especially devoted to replicas of (or even vintage original) mid-century modern pieces, my mood boards sometimes turn out just a shade antiqueier (yup, that's a word now) or more gypsy-caravan than I'd like.

I like an interior that's fresher, crisper and younger. And no one's got dibs on fresh, crisp and young quite like Blu Dot. Blu Dot also has their annual "20% off everything" sale going down right now, so this post is particularly timely. My plan for today is to mix-and-match items available from today's sales on One Kings Lane with pieces from Blu Dot. (Given that most people are unlikely to furnish an apartment from scratch all in a day's one-stop online shopping, showing how One Kings Lane pieces can be worked into an existing modern decor scheme is probably more instructive.) Here goes!

Mountain House Entry

Riffing on OKL's Winter Lodge theme, I designed an entry for my dream mountain house in "winter white" and brass. (A question for Fashionistas: is there a legitimate difference between winter white and summer white? Or is that just what you call it after labor day to dodge anachronistic sartorial conventions? This is a serious question. I have oft wondered.)
